Applications for Expanding Horizons Internships

Are you an 11th grade/10th grade student interested in becoming a well rounded leader in your community/school, but are not sure how or where to start? Have you ever wondered what it's like to work in a professional setting? Do you want to gain more confidence and interact with other high school students that share similar interests with you? If you answered yes to any of the questions then CRF's Expanding Horizons Internships (EHI) is the program for you!

By joining CRF's EHI you will be provided with specific skills including:

Communications  *  Professional Work Place  *  Civic Participation  *  College Prep

Since 1995, Expanding Horizons Internships (EHI) has given under-served high school students from the Greater Los Angeles area the opportunity to participate in an innovative program which provides students with professional skill-building, community awareness, and educational preparation necessary for effective action in our democratic society. Students attend educational workshops beginning in the spring and work in the summer.

EHI is now recruiting students for 2015! Students must submit PART I (Online Application) and download and send via mail  to CRF PART II ( 11th Grade  or 10th Grade ). Only 10th grade students can only apply for the alternate position.

The deadline to turn in the application for the 2015 Expanding Horizons Internships is Friday, January 23, 2015.

The program dates for 2015 are the following:

Group A: Seminars from March – June * Job placement and seminars: June – July

Group B: Seminars from March – July * Job placement and seminars: July – August

Who can apply?

EHI is looking for students who meet all of the following criteria:

  • Neither parent has a college degree from a four-year institution
  • Be eligible to for the free/reduced meals program at their school
  • Be eligible to work in the United States
  • Provide your own transportation to work and the seminars

Sophomores can only apply for the alternate position.

What is an alternate position?

Sophomores are only eligible to apply for the alternate position and will be given an exclusive opportunity to participate in all of EHI's seminars. As well as get a paid summer internship if one becomes available, however it is not guaranteed

2015 Online Application

All of the students must complete Part I online. After completing Part I, select Part II of the application that best fits your grade level and send it via mail on or before the deadline.

Make sure to make a copy for yourself in case your application gets lost in the mail.

After I submit my application, what happens?

EHI staff will review the application and will send you an email with the date of your orientation and first interview if applicable. If you haven't heard back from us one week after the deadline, call or email at 213.316.2127 or nina@crf-usa.org. It is very important to follow up.

CRF’s Expanding Horizons Internships (EHI) combine paid internships in exciting professional settings with 20 interactive seminars. The program starts in the spring and concludes in the summer with the paid summer internship. EHI provides professional skill-building, community awareness, and educational and college preparation seminars necessary for effective action in our democratic society. EHI places qualified urban students from the Los Angeles area as paid interns in law firms, businesses, government offices, and non-profit organizations.

To be accepted into the program, students must (1) complete a written application, (2) submit a transcript and two letters of recommendation, (3) provide proof of participation in the Free/Reduced Meals Program, (4) write an essay, and (5) pass two rounds of interviews.

This program is only offered for 11th grade students, but we do have an alternate position available for 10th grade students. As an EHI alternate the student is given an exclusive opportunity to participate in all of EHI’s educational seminars and be eligible to get a paid summer internship if one becomes available.  As an alternate a paid summer internship is not guaranteed.

The deadline to turn in the application for CRF’s Expanding Horizons Internships is January 23, 2015.

Constitutional Rights Foundation’s Expanding Horizons Internships (EHI) is a rigorous program that places high school students as paid interns in professional environments. EHI offers students the chance to gain work experience by helping staff at corporate, nonprofit, and government job sites. Additionally, students attend interactive seminars designed to help them prepare for college, career, and civic life. The seminars are designed to provide youth with specific skills including:
