Expanding Horizons Internships Description

The program provides paid work experience and educational seminars for Juniors. The deadline to turn in the application for CRF’s 2012 Expanding Horizons Internships is February 15, 2012

Group A: Seminars from April – June * Job placement and seminars: June 25 – July 27

Alternate Position:

An EHI alternate is a sophomore student given an exclusive opportunity to participate in all of EHI’s educational seminars and be eligible to get a paid summer internship. As an EHI alternate you will be eligible for a paid summer internship, if one becomes available.  Normally, EHI internships are only offered to students in their junior year. As an alternate a paid summer internship is not guaranteed. If the student is not selected for a paid summer internship, they will have the unique opportunity to apply to EHI the following year and bypass the 1st phase of the application process, automatically moving on to the 2nd phase. In addition, the student will be privileged to select their top three job sites to be interviewed at.

Work Experience

The Expanding Horizons Internships' job site work experience provides interns with an opportunity to work in the arts, business or finance, education, government, health, human services, law or public relations (click here for a list of our job sites). Students will begin work at the job site in the summer starting late June or early July and finish in August.  Interns will work 4 days out of the week for 7 hours a day and one day a week for 5 hours a day.  They will be earning $8.00/hour for all work hours. Students will work in a professional office in the field of arts, business/finance, education, government, health, humans services, law or media/entertainment. Most of the job sites are located in Downtown L.A., Mid City and Century City. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation. If necessary, CRF staff will help the student become familiarized with the public transportation system. 

Seminars

Students will attend seminars on active citizenship, college preparation, leadership, life skills and learn how to function in the workplace during the Spring. These seminars are held bi-weekly in the late afternoon and some on Saturdays starting the week of Spring Break in April and continue until June (see calendar for dates).   Students will explore the city of Los Angeles, learn presentation skills, teamwork, communication skills, professionalism and receive college preparation.  All seminars are interactive, educational and fun! Students will receive a $5 transportation stipend for each seminar they attend.  Throughout the job placement phase, interns will also attend seminars once a week and participate in the culmination event.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to participate in Expanding Horizons Internships, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a junior in high school
  • Be available all program dates and times from April-August. (No conflicts with intersession, summer school, extracurricular activities, other jobs, etc.)
  • Provide your own transportation to work and the seminars. Many interns utilize public transportation to get to their job sites and the seminars.  We can help familiarize you with the bus and train system

Meet the following criteria:

  • Neither parent has graduated from college (this includes degrees from country of origin if different than US)
  • Participate in the Free/Reduced Price Meals program (must provide proof)
  • Have documentation to work in the United States (e.g. Social Security card or unexpired US Passport)

Application Checklist

A completed application must include the following:

  • One-page essay – Minimum 1 page and must be typed
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A signed parent/ legal guardian agreement form
  • Student signature on the application form
  • An official transcript (This is a school record of your grades, not your report card. See your school counselor)
  • Copies of work documentation (see application for details)
  • Free/Reduced Lunch Program documentation

Complete the application and send it to CRF using regular (1st class) mail on or before the deadline. Please do not use FedEx or any other Express Service. CRF’s mailing address is: Expanding Horizons Internships, 601 S. Kingsley Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90005.

Be sure to make a copy for yourself in case your application gets lost in the mail.
