Scopes "Monkey Trial"

The Scopes trial involved a high school teacher named John T. Scopes, who broke a Tennessee
law by teaching the theory of evolution in his biology classes. Defense attorney Clarence Darrow challenged
the law in court, while the prosecution, led by lawyer, statesman, and former presidential candidate
William Jennings Bryan, defended the law as upholding the sanctity of the Bible. The trial attracted national
attentionand raised public awareness about issues involving science and religion.
